Although C355.0 is a modification of 355.0, its characteristics are much the same (elongation and strengths are higher). Parts are usually heat treated. Strengths at elevated temperatures are relatively high.
C355.0 sand castings include printing press bedplates, air compressor pistons, water jackets, crankcases.. electric motor fans and blowers. Permanent mold castings are used for aircraft, missile, and other components requiring high strength, and for fittings, impellers, timing gears and aircraft supercharger covers. Automotive uses include passenger car wheels, engine blocks, cylinder heads, spring brackets, transmission cases, and miscellaneous truck and trailer castings.
Excellent castability is exhibited by 055.0. Pressure tightness, resistance to hot cracldng, fluidity and solidification shrinkage tendencies are all rated excellent.
Machining characteristics are considered good, being somewhat better than those shown by 356.0, but not as good as those shown by alloys that have lower silicon content, such as 514.0. Metal removal should be light and at high speeds.
Welding characteristics of Alloy 055.0 are excellent for standard welding procedures. Brazing is considered impractical.
Polished finishes are relatively good. Anodized appearance is fair. Chemical conversion and electroplated coatings are very good.
The resistance to most atmospheric conditions is good, only slightly less than that of Alloys 333.0 or 356.0.
